Background

World electricity demand is expected to continue to grow more strongly than any other final form of energy. In the New Policies Scenario, it is projected to grow by 2.2% per year between 2008 and 2035, with more 80% of the increase occurring in non-OECD countries according to 2010 report of International Energy Agency.

To meet the increasing demands of electricity, for last decades the earth has used fossil fuels that emit a large amount of Co2, therefore, it has led the world concerns about the climate change due to the global warming. Although new and renewable energy resources such as solar radiation energy, wind power and biomass are receiving considerable attention and governmental support, practical application of these new and renewable energy resources in generating electricity large concentrated loads is still limited and expensive due to economics, environmental concerns and reliability.

In this situation, electricity from Nuclear power generation will be a primary energy resource to achieve green growth required throughout the world for sustainable development under threats of such global warming.

Korean nuclear power industry has gained remarkable achievements over the last 30 years and accomplished steady technology advancements, also secured international reputation from nuclear related organizations such as IAEA, WANO and INPO.

To make sure continuing developments of the nuclear power industry, safety should become first priority and it requires professionals possessing in-depth knowledge and experience in a timely manner.

Construction of one NPP (600MWe~1400MWe) requires 6,000~7,000 technicians & engineers. Operation and maintenance of a NPP require 360~350 licensed professionals. Especially, leadership-level professionals who should make a right decision account for about 10% of the licensed professionals, that is 30~35 per NPP.

Such leadership-level professionals are needed at the range from the planning stage, designing, construction, operation, maintenance and management. In addition, it is quite urgent to produce professionals who will contribute themselves to nations that are introducing nuclear power plants or increasing the generation capacity of nuclear power.

In this view, KINGS is seeking safety and sustainable of world’s nuclear power through educating and training leadership-level professional in nuclear power plant engineering.
